Compare and Contrast

The original image (top) is similar to my revision (bottom) in that it still has the two cliffs and the waterfall, as well as the general color of the sky.  Also the general use of colors is very similar. One key difference is the complete change of art style. I changed the style from abstract impressionism to a style of drawing more often seen in children's storybooks. Another key difference is the lessened use of black and white to create a more colorful scene consistent with the aesthetic I chose for my version.

Objective Critique

This piece is an Abstract Impressionism of what I believe to be a waterfall scene from the perspective of an opposing cliff, though I cannot say for certain. Color creates the mood of the piece by using warm colors to give the feeling of late afternoon/evening and brighter colors such as green and white illustrate key parts of the piece like the cliff, waterfall and so on. The combinations of these colors create contrast to emphasize certain aspects of the piece, parts the artist wishes to draw your attention to, such as the grassy cliff and the waterfall, which are both bordered by the red. The nebulous nature of the piece allows your eyes to be directed without the heavy use of shapes.

Subjective Critique:

My first reaction? Wow, what a mess! I can vaguely see what the artist was intending to illustrate here, however so much of his message is lost in the seemingly random brush strokes, the mixed imagery, and the annoyingly liberal use of red in the most inappropriate places. I am currently making changes to the whole nature of the piece, making a clearer scene while eliminating the streaks of red, clean up the key features of the scene and give them definition and presence, while attempting to home in on the intended message of the work. Using colored pencils I will also change the aesthetic to that of a child's story book or perhaps Yoshi's Story if you know that game's visual style.
